[edit] Information on Translations for Rocketboom and Ehrensenf

rocketboom.com ehrensenf.de

Ok, if anyone is willing to lead the ball with the translations, here is the deal.

This awesome system dotsub makes it easy for our episodes to be translated by anyone.

If you decide to pitch in, it will help and if no one does, it won't happen until one day we can hire the resources to translate.

I think it would be awesome if the audience took this on themselves.

Step 1: Add the native transcript. For Rocketboom, just entering in the English.

This would create a closed caption version and be useful for the deaf, who are missing out quite a bit on the new online media revolution.

Step 2: Anyone who is bilingual can add to the translation in that language, the system is set up to support almost any language.

So here is a today's video for Rocketboom: http://stage.dotsub.com/films/december14

It would take about 10 sec to create an account so that you can edit the videos.

Here is the location for today's Ehrensenf ready for translation:

http://stage.dotsub.com/films/ehrensenfdecember

First, it should be transcribed in German. Then, we can add the English. http://www.ehrensenf.de/ESenglisch.doc

[edit] How dotsub Works

  • You can watch films without being signed in.
  • You can choose from all available languages for that.
  • After uploading a film it seems it gotta be converted (this is in progress for the ehrensenf video right now [12/14 12:12 EST])
  • Having been converted someone, who is signed in, can start transcribing the movie in the native language. This blocks everyone else from editing for 60minutes. (this is in progress for the rocketboom episode right now [12/14 12:15 EST])
  • For sign-in up you are asked for: First Name, Last Name, Email, User Name, Password, Preferred Language and whether you wanna show up on the Translation Credits. There is no email sent to you immediately after sign up.
  • After an initial transcript is created one can choose a language and translate into that language. At least the one beginning the translation will lock this translation option for about an hour.
  • It seems that tweaking a translation or the transcript doesn't impose such a long lock down.
  • About 2min into dotsubing my first episode, I got quite used to the short cuts. I still try using Ctrl+Shift+Left/Right for other things, but using all their short cuts is quite fast. Paused Film then CTRL+SHIFT+UP,CTRL+Shift+P, listen, CTRL+Shift+P, Type the stuff u just listened to, CTRL+Shift+DOWN, DOWN, CTRL+Shift+UP, ,CTRL+Shift+P, listen, CTRL+Shift+P, Type the stuff u just listened to, CTRL+Shift+DOWN, DOWN, ....
  • One can transcribe and translate further rocketboom videos at http://stage.dotsub.com/home/user/index.php?target=38 . But I'm not sure whether rocketboom keeps the number 38. I got there video via http://stage.dotsub.com/ and then Users.(or click on rocketboom as soon as you get hold of a rocketboom video.)

[edit] Open Questions

  • I don't know to mark a transcript as done. When clicking on "Done", the film won't be listed as transcripted.
  • Why isn't the a link to http://stage.dotsub.com/ from http://www.dotsub.com/. http://stage.dotsub.com/ has your films listed.
  • The Ajax is still in development: Why are the input boxes for the transcript placed a little different every time? Why is the last line missing, sometimes? Why is "Add 10 lines" not working every time (fortunately all the changes got saved, despite my being redirected from the trascript page to to the film page.
  • Who's got the rights on the transcipt and translation? Is rocketboom/Ehrensenf allowed to use the the subtitled versions? Can everyone extract the transcript and translation from the dotSub and use as long as it doesn't violate the rights of the video owners?
  • Is there an undo button? Is there a history of changes? Otherwise spam would be hard to undo.

[edit] Comments/Answers from dotSUB

  • Only the person uploading the film/video (or someone using the same login info) can mark the transcript as complete.
  • the stage site is intentionally separate from the original dotsub site as it is a staging site for the tools to be tested and played with. Once we are happy with them, they will all be integrated back into a newly designed dotsub.com site.
  • many features still a bit buggy - so please keep pointing them out to us. Many of your comments have already been addressed for a release date in a few months.
  • the rights issues are very complex, and we just have an interim translator agreement in place while we are working on a more permanent one. All of these issues are pushing the frontier of the way things have been done, and the rights holder of the videos are the ones who decide how things are done - dotSUB is just providing the tools to make it happen.
  • Thanks for all the interest in Rocketboom and Ehrensenf
